About Dr Vardonikolaki
Dr Katerina Vardonikolaki M.D. is an otolaryngologist specializing in hearing and balance and a medical director and founder of Orlabkv which aims hearing disorder prevention, performing arts medicine and education. She has treated many musicians, singers, actors and dancers from Greece, Europe and USA.
She was awarded her PhD entitled “Hearing disorders in professionals exposed to music” from the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (subject of otology).

She received her medical degree from the Medical School of Crete in 2002. She trained in general surgery at King's College Hospital, London and at 401 General Military Hospital, Athens. Afterwards, she trained for two years in pediatric otolaryngology at the Aghia Sophia Children’s Hospital, Athens. Following that Dr. Vardonikolaki completed her training in the ENT University Clinic of Hippokration Hospital of Athens and she was awarded the title of specialty in Otorhinolaryngology by the Greek Ministry of Health.
Dr. Vardonikolaki worked at the University ENT clinic of Hippokration Hospital as an academic fellow until 2020. During that time she worked clinically with patients, conducted research projects and taught undergraduate medical students.
Dr. Vardonikolaki has been involved in the assessment and treatment of hearing problems of music-exposed professionals for over a decade. She has attended numerous scientific seminars and continues to be constantly updated on new scientific data and also participates in international scientific committees.
Research interest
She has a special interest in otology and audiology with a focus on hearing pathology related to occupational exposure to music/noise.
Her thesis is entitled "Assessment and recording of hearing disorders in musicians" creating specific questionnaires and developing appropriate diagnostic audiological tests for this professional group.
She has experience in participation in European projects (FP7,Horizon 2020) and part of her thesis has been funded by Bernice Bibby Research Trust, UK.
Some of the research projects include cochlear modelling, the cochlear hair cell regeneration project with a pharmaceutical agent (REgeneration of inner ear hair cells with GAmma-secretase INhibitors) and the project to analyse big data from the use of 'smart' hearing aids to support health policies for hearing loss (EVOTION).

In more detail, Dr Katerina Vardonikolaki has received the first prize at an international conference (American Speech–Language–Hearing Association) in Boston for the creation of a specialized questionnaire for professionals involved in music, and a travel award for the scientific conference Cochlear Mechanics from Harvard Medical School.
