When should the tonsils be removed (tonsillectomy)?
Count the number of episodes of tonsillitis the child has per year.
The current guidelines of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (AAOHNS Guidelines), regarding tonsillectomy involving children state that candidates for tonsillectomy are children who have:

7 episodes of tonsillitis in 1 year; or

5 episodes of tonsillitis for 2 consecutive years; or
-
3 episodes of tonsillitis for 3 years
