Hypertrophy of tonsils (Tonsil enlargement)

When should the tonsils be removed (tonsillectomy)?

Count the number of episodes of tonsillitis the child has per year.

The current guidelines of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (AAOHNS Guidelines), regarding tonsillectomy involving children state that candidates for tonsillectomy are children who have:

  • 7 episodes of tonsillitis in 1 year; or

  • 5 episodes of tonsillitis for 2 consecutive years; or

  • 3 episodes of tonsillitis for 3 years
